Raising the Standard of NPC Bikini Posing in Mexico

By Courtney Ustrzycki, IFBB Bikini Pro, International Posing Coach & Best NPC Posing Coach in Mexico

Over the last two decades, the structure of competitive bodybuilding and bikini has changed significantly, and with it, the standards athletes are judged by. Understanding this evolution is essential for any competitor who wants to succeed in today’s NPC Bikini division.

In 2004–2005, the IFBB Professional Division officially separated from the amateur IFBB, becoming what is now known as the IFBB Pro League, led by Jim Manion. While the IFBB International Federation continued to oversee amateur bodybuilding worldwide, the professional side began developing its own standards, expectations, and judging trends. A major shift occurred again in 2017, when the NPC and IFBB Pro League fully separated from the IFBB International Federation (in Mexico, it’s referred to as the FMFF). This created two clearly distinct competitive pathways, each with its own criteria, aesthetics, and priorities.

Today, the NPC and IFBB Pro League operate under a judging philosophy that is most heavily influenced by standards set in the United States. This is where the highest concentration of shows, judges, and top-level athletes exist, and where Bikini as a division continues to evolve most rapidly. While IFBB International (FMFF) competitions have their own structure and expectations, those standards do not always translate directly to what NPC judges are looking for.

As someone who has earned IFBB Pro status (2022), competed internationally (2023-2025), and worked with about 100 NPC athletes across Bikini, Wellness, and Fit Model divisions, I have seen firsthand how these differences impact athlete results. I have spent years studying biomechanics (even before competing), posing mechanics, and judging patterns, not just memorizing poses, but understanding why certain presentations and physiques are rewarded and others are not.

In Mexico, the talent pool is strong and continues to grow. Physiques are improving every season, conditioning is more competitive, and the level of commitment from athletes is undeniable. Where many athletes struggle is not effort, but guidance.

What often gets labeled as “outdated posing” is more accurately a result of crossed standards and limited exposure to current NPC expectations. Many athletes are being coached using posing frameworks that originate from IFBB International (FMFF) shows or from coaches who apply the same routine to every athlete, regardless of structure, height, or division. In other cases, coaches simply lack the tools to critically assess and modify posing for each individual athlete.

This becomes especially apparent when division lines blur. For example, Wellness athletes teaching Bikini posing may unintentionally incorporate Wellness traits such as heavier hip emphasis, exaggerated leg presentation, or overly powerful transitions that disrupt the softer, more streamlined look Bikini judges reward. Bikini posing requires restraint, precision, and subtlety. Without a clear understanding of division-specific criteria, athletes can unintentionally pose themselves out of contention.

NPC Bikini posing today is not about hitting positions for the sake of tradition. Judges are rewarding athletes who can control their body under pressure and with fatigue, maintain clean lines, and transition with poise. Angles matter. Timing matters. Breath control, facial expression, posture, and composure are all part of the overall presentation. The goal is not to do more, but to do exactly what enhances the physique in front of the judges.

Another critical skill is stage awareness. Athletes must know how to walk, stop, reset, and re-present themselves during comparisons, not just during an individual routine. Many athletes practice posing in isolation but are unprepared for real-time adjustments under callouts. NPC judges consistently reward athletes who remain polished and composed from the moment they step onstage until they exit.

Raising the standard of NPC Bikini posing in Mexico does require a shift in mindset, but not in the abstract sense. It requires athletes and coaches to think beyond national borders. The most consistent, refined NPC Bikini standards are being set in the United States. Learning from U.S.-based judges, observing U.S. shows, and staying in constant communication with mentors who are immersed in that environment is essential for athletes who want to be competitive at a high level.

This is where my role comes in. My mission is to bridge the gap between Mexican athletes and current NPC expectations (more specifically in Bikini, but also very emphasized with Wellness and Fit Model) by bringing those standards directly into how athletes are coached, prepared, and presented onstage. When athletes understand what judges are actually rewarding today and why, their confidence improves, their presentation sharpens, and their results follow.

Mexico has everything it needs to produce world-class NPC Bikini athletes and new IFBB Pros. The next step is aligning posing education with the correct league, the correct criteria, and the current international standard. Posing is not about being flashy or copying someone else’s routine. It is about clarity, control, and confidence, presented in a way that fits the athlete’s body and the division they are competing in. When that alignment happens, the entire level of competition rises.

For NPC athletes who want their posing to reflect current judging standards and the full potential of their physique, this is the level of guidance I provide to every athlete I work with (regardless of language barrier.)
